Horizon scanning is a future-oriented observation method that gathers signals from the present to build plausible or provocative narratives about what might happen next.
'Methodologies such as trend analysis, horizon scanning, scenario planning, and speculative design are, in essence, forms of observation oriented towards understanding and interrogating potential future contexts', involving 'systematically gathering and interpreting signals from the present to construct plausible, possible, or provocative narratives about what might lie ahead' (Ch12 §126).
