the Courses
The Symbiotic Design Academy (SDA) specializes in delivering cutting-edge online courses in sustainable design, catering to a global community of designers and professionals. What sets us apart is a unique teaching approach developed by Dr. Gonzalo Raineri, a seasoned figure whose work bridges the gap between biological systems and creative practice. The academy’s core theory, the Symbiotic Design Framework (SDF) is the result of over six years of intensive research.
A Journey of Research and Global Validation
The SDF did not emerge in isolation; it is a rigorous synthesis of theoretical constructs and practical testing that has been validated across a prestigious selection of academic and professional stages. This journey began with Dr. Raineri’s foundational PhD thesis, "Autopoietic Design," which involved interviews with over 360 designers and a review of five hundred books to identify the framework’s core components.
Since its inception, the framework has been stress-tested and presented at major international design events, growing in scope and impact:
-
International Dialogues: The framework's core propositions were debated at the Congreso Latinoamericano de Enseñanza del Diseño in Buenos Aires (2018) and the XIV Simposio Internacional del Posgrado en Artes y Diseño (UNAM) in Mexico. It was formally introduced to the global academic community at Cumulus Rome 2020.
-
Global Exposure: A pivotal moment occurred when the project was selected for an acceleration program in Valencia, Spain, supported by Next Generation EU funding. During World Design Capital Valencia 2022, the framework was refined against a year-long pluriversity of global activities.
-
Recent Milestones: In April 2024, we presented the SDF Workshop at the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Festival in Brussels. This was followed by engagements at Dutch Design Week and Creative Skills Week, which were instrumental in finalizing the methodology. Most recently, at the World Design Congress London 2025, a paper presenting the complete abstract of the Framework was selected for publication in the official proceedings.
Rethinking the Design Process
Rooted in a profound synthesis of design principles and biological concepts, specifically the concept of Autopoiesis pioneered by Maturana and Varela, the SDF offers a holistic perspective on environmental and social sustainability. By providing a structured guide for observing and managing the relationships within the design process, we ensure that no critical aspects are overlooked. These "blind spots" in traditional design are often the root causes of environmental harm and social injustices.
A New Chapter
Following a comprehensive overhaul of the framework during the writing of our latest book, Symbiotic Design Framework: Rethinking Design from Within, we have reached a turning point. We have decided to retire our previous course catalog to make way for a new generation of training that reflects these advanced insights. We are currently developing a new suite of courses that will empower you to move beyond linear practices and into systemic, regenerative design.

Elevate Your Practice: The SDF Evolution Program
In an era of ecological collapse and systemic instability, the traditional "problem-solving" model of design is not just obsolete, it is a liability. Practitioners today are trapped in Pseudo-Design: a state of uninformed execution that prioritizes aesthetic novelty over ethical rigor and systemic health.
The Symbiotic Design Framework offers a rigorous, academic departure from these linear failures. We invite you to transition from a technical executor to a strategic partner of the living world through our two-tier professional transformation.
A Dual-Phase Path
To master the Symbiotic Design Framework is to undergo a professional metamorphosis from a creator of unsustainable products to a steward of sustainable symbiotic systems. While typical e-learning focuses on fragmented skills, this program offers a complete Transformational Methodology.

Phase 1 SDF for Design Practitioners
From Pseudo-Design to Informed Intentionality
Stop guessing and start justifying. Most design today lacks a foundational "Why," resulting in outcomes that function as systemic waste. This 6-week intensive is your academic foundation in Relational Mutualism. You will dismantle the habits of Pseudo-Design by mastering the 7 Components and the Four Mottos (Ethics, Sustainability, Social Responsibility, and Economics).
-
The Academic Core: You will apply the SDF to Tame Problems—challenges with clear boundaries where outcomes can be objectively verified through the internal logic of the framework.
-
The Professional Edge: This is a high-touch, self-paced program. You aren't just watching videos; you are recalibrating your cognitive architecture.
-
The Transformation: You will graduate as an Informed Architect or Designer, capable of proving that every design decision functions as a "nutrient" within its specific niche.
Includes: Direct support throughout the curriculum and a Live Private Inquiry Session in Week 6 to resolve procedural frictions.

Phase 2 SDF for Complex Design Dynamics
From Linear Execution to Symbiotic Partnership
The most pressing challenges of our century are Wicked Problems: contradictory, irreversible, and systemic. You cannot solve a wicked problem with a linear brief. This 8-week advanced program moves beyond the object to the Chronosystem and the Multi-scalar Hierarchy, teaching you to navigate the drift of time and the friction of complex environments.
-
The Academic Core: Shift from allopoietic (externally driven) models to Autopoietic Stewardship—designing processes capable of self-production and long-term viability within the Macrosystem.
-
The Strategic Edge: Utilizing a "dripped content" model for deep cognitive absorption, this course prepares you to manage the Frontier and Environment dimensions where requirements are in constant flux.
-
The Transformation: Graduate as a Symbiotic Steward. You will master the four concurrent movements of the SDF: Situating, Diagnosis, Intervention, and Calibration.
Includes: Two Live Private Inquiry Sessions—academic forums designed for expert calibration of your interventions against the complexity of real-world systemic variables.
Why this Program? This program replaces the isolation of self-paced learning with the rigor of Live Academic Support.
You are guided through the SDF not as a student but as a practitioner-in-residence, supported by a framework that demands and delivers professional excellence.
Enrollment ensures full access to the Symbiotic Design Framework text as a permanent methodological reference for your practice.
what our past students had to say...

Dmytro Bielopolskyi
"Thanks to this introductory course I've received the basic understanding of the Symbiotic Design Framework. Though this is totally new concept for me, I feel great sympathy and emotional connection to it. In my previous career I preferred to involve in sustainable projects and in all of them I seemed to move more intuitively. Now I have a great chance to try more systemic and mindful process of SDF in my next project. It was a pleasure to meet Gonzalo Raineri as an instructor and mentor. Thank you."

“The course encourages critical reflection on design, "from and for design with the context", with society, with traditions and customs, with economics, with politics, without limitations...”
