Vernacular

Vernacular procedures are practices rooted in local tradition and passed down through generations, often carrying real accumulated wisdom well suited to their original context. The book notes this wisdom can also carry hidden biases or inefficiencies, and that formal design draws on and systematizes vernacular knowledge over time.
As a Variable of the Procedures Component, Vernacular is defined as procedures "rooted in established traditions, local practices, and the common conventions of a specific socio-ecological context. Often learned implicitly and passed down through generations, Vernacular procedures represent a form of accumulated wisdom and can be seen as the procedural manifestation of Proto-Design. They are frequently optimized through long-term, iterative adaptation to local materials, climates, and cultural needs, often embodying a deep, sustainable truth," though the book cautions this "deep truth can sometimes coexist with embedded biases or inefficiencies when applied to new contexts." The book also traces vernacular procedures through time: "Design procedures are products of their history, evolving through a process of Design Ethnoevolution [019] from historical precedents and the deep, accumulated knowledge of vernacular traditions... The formal design discipline actively engages with these traditions at its Frontier; it observes, deconstructs, and often systematizes them, transforming tacit, localized craft knowledge into explicit methodologies."
