Cited together with its originators Terry Irwin, Gideon Kossoff and Cameron Tonkinwise, Transition Design is named as a methodology suited to wicked, long-term societal transitions, providing procedural frameworks that help overcome path dependencies.
Under the Commission Component's Variables, wicked commissions are said to require methodologies "more appropriate for navigating the complexities presented by wicked commissions, aiming for long-term societal transitions and systemic understanding rather than single, definitive solutions": "Methodologies like Transition Design, Systemic Design toolkits and specifically the Symbiotic Design Framework." The Procedures Component names its originators directly: "As pioneers of Transition Design, Terry Irwin, Gideon Kossoff, and Cameron Tonkinwise emphasize procedural frameworks for addressing complex, long-term societal transitions." It is also listed among design's evolving methodologies ("Service Design, Transition Design, and Pluriversal Design") and named as a means to overcome path dependencies: "Transition Design methodologies aim to overcome them."
