Reflective practice, grounded in Donald Schön's idea of the reflective practitioner, is how designers learn by examining their own actions. It is used to check whether a method genuinely fits a new context, and is offered as part of the Framework's own value system alongside its Four Mottos.
The book grounds Reflective Practice in Donald Schön: at the level of the individual designer, 'Donald Schön's concept of the "Reflective Practitioner" is crucial here, emphasizing how designers learn from experience by reflecting on their actions,' and in the Observations Component, 'it embodies the learning capacity of design, a concept central to Donald Schön's work on The Reflective Practitioner, where professionals learn by doing and by reflecting on their actions.' It is also named as a check on methodological transfer: 'Reflective Practice on methodological fit and Cross-Cultural Design studies help here,' addressing methods 'applied uncritically' across contexts. And it is offered as the value-system counterpart to organizational closure: the Framework 'seeks not to dismantle this closure, which is essential for disciplinary identity, but to introduce reflective practices and value systems, the Four Mottos.'
