African Design Review

Mpho Matsipa is a South African architectural scholar, educator and curator at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, with a PhD from UC Berkeley and teaching posts at Columbia GSAPP, Cooper Union and Harvard GSD. Her platforms for critical African design discourse include the South Africa Pavilion at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, Studio-X Johannesburg (2014-2016), the African Mobilities exhibition at the Architecture Museum in Munich (2018) and its podcast series, connecting practitioners and theorists across fourteen African and diasporic cities. A publication under the exact name African Design Review could not be located when this record was checked. The African Design Review, co-founded by architectural scholar Mpho Matsipa, provides a critical platform (Partner) for designers, architects, and theorists across the African continent and its diaspora. Through publications and symposia (Outcomes/Procedures), it fosters a collective discourse (Design Community) that interrogates colonial legacies in design and champions Afro-centric perspectives and knowledge systems, contributing to the evolution of global design theory.
