The precautionary approach calls for caution and transparency when working with materials of uncertain risk, and for weighing potential long-term, unintended consequences before they occur, so that present outcomes support future wellbeing.
The book invokes the precautionary approach in the Technological Component's discussion of material health risks: 'This requires a commitment to material transparency and a precautionary approach when dealing with substances of unknown toxicity.' In the Outcomes Component, under Ethics, it 'demands a precautionary approach, considering potential long-term, unintended consequences beyond immediate utility, and actively promoting transparency and accountability in how the outcome impacts individuals and society.' Under the Outcomes Component's own 'Future' subsection, it states that 'considering the future involves a precautionary principle, aiming to minimize negative consequences and ensure that the outcomes produced in the present contribute to collective flourishing and planetary health.'
