Design for Disassembly

Design for disassembly is a core principle of designing out waste, favoring durability, repairability and adaptability so products can be safely disassembled, reused or returned to biological or technical cycles.
Under the Outcomes Component's Environment Dimension, the book states that "a symbiotic design approach fundamentally emphasizes designing out waste through core principles such as durability, repairability, adaptability, and design for disassembly. It advocates for non-toxic materials... that can be safely reintegrated into biological or technical cycles, promoting circular economy principles... It also links intimately with the Sustainability motto [096]." The same Component's Sustainability alignment states the outcome "must explicitly design out waste, fostering durability, repairability, and adaptability to extend product lifespans and facilitate graceful disassembly." The Procedures Component lists it among standard practices: "Methodologies for life-cycle assessment, circular design such as implementing cradle-to-cradle protocols in product development, and designing for disassembly become standard practice, not afterthoughts." The Sustainability motto chapter includes "planning for eventual graceful disassembly, component reuse, remanufacturing, or safe biological decomposition (closing the loop)" among its ethical obligations.
