Participatory Design

Participatory design gathers real-time feedback and draws on diverse and community-held knowledge, and is linked by the book to democratic values and social justice. Community workshops such as those run by Fundación Mi Parque in Chile are given as a concrete example of the method in practice.
The book lists Participatory Design feedback among the methods that engage the Present within Design Ethnoevolution's Selection stage: 'Methodologies for engaging the Present (A/B testing, Usability Testing, Design Critique, Participatory Design feedback) act as selection mechanisms in real-time, favoring approaches that demonstrate value or resonance now' (Ch2 §019). The same section frames it as a source of knowledge diversity: 'Actively fostering and learning from pluriversal design knowledge (through Participatory Design, engaging with Community-Held Knowledge, supporting Indigenous design practices) strengthens the entire ecosystem' (Ch2 §019). Under Structural Coupling, the book groups it with related paradigms: 'the increasing emphasis on Pluriverses in Design, Participatory Design and Co-design methodologies demonstrates a coupling with democratic ideals, social justice movements, and a growing recognition of the importance of including diverse voices and forms of expertise in the design process' (Ch6 §058). As a concrete instance within the Observations Component's Frontier Dimension, 'Fundación Mi Parque in Chile exemplifies a methodology designed for such Dialogue. Their participatory design workshops serve as a core observational and co-creative procedure' (Ch12 §123).
