Published in 2002 by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart, the book has been called one of the most influential environmental manifestos of its time and has been translated into thirteen languages. Rather than aiming only to minimise damage, the authors argue that design can be a positive, regenerative force, built on three principles: that everything should function as a resource for something else, either as a biological nutrient that returns safely to soil or a technical nutrient reused in new products; that systems should run on clean, renewable energy such as sun, wind and geothermal power; and that designs should respect and adapt to local geography and culture rather than impose a single standard everywhere.
