The Hidden Messages in Water presents Masaru Emoto's photographic studies of ice crystals formed from water exposed to different words, music and intentions. Emoto uses these images to argue that human thought and emotion can influence the physical structure of water, and by extension the environment and the body.
In The Hidden Messages in Water, Japanese author Masaru Emoto describes his practice of freezing water samples and photographing the resulting ice crystals under a microscope. He reports that water drawn from clear natural springs, or water that had been exposed to words of gratitude or love, tended to form intricate, symmetrical crystal patterns, while polluted water, or water exposed to negative words or emotions, formed irregular or incomplete patterns. From these photographs Emoto builds his central argument: that human thoughts, words and feelings can affect the physical structure of water, and since the human body and the planet are made mostly of water, this influence extends to personal health and the wider environment. The book presents this as a call to be conscious of the words and intentions we direct at ourselves, others and the world. It should be read as Emoto's own account of his method and conclusions; his central claims about water and consciousness are not accepted within mainstream physics or biology and remain widely disputed by scientists.
