Systems Thinkers presents short biographical and intellectual portraits of thirty major figures in the history of systems thinking, drawn from fields as different as biology, cybernetics, management and sociology. Each portrait combines an account of the thinker's life and ideas with a short extract from their own writing.
Systems Thinkers, by Magnus Ramage and Karen Shipp, tells the history of systems thinking through the people who built it rather than through its concepts alone. The book profiles thirty influential figures, grouped into six broad traditions running from early cybernetics through to learning systems, and for each one gives an account of their key contributions, how those ideas took shape in practice, and how the thinker's life connected to their work. Because systems thinking has always drawn on many disciplines, the people covered come from biology, management science, physiology, anthropology, chemistry, sociology, public policy and environmental studies, among other fields. Each chapter includes a short extract of the thinker's own writing, so readers get a direct sense of their voice as well as a summary of their ideas, with the aim of pointing readers toward whichever original works most interest them.
