This book surveys the full life cycle of the five materials that account for most global resource use, steel, aluminium, cement, plastic and paper, and argues for reducing demand through material efficiency rather than relying only on cleaner production. It combines engineering analysis with real industrial examples to propose ways of delivering the same goods and services with less new material.
Sustainable Materials with Both Eyes Open is an evidence-based survey that looks beyond cleaner and more efficient production toward reducing material demand altogether. It examines the full life cycle, from smelting and manufacturing to final recycling, of the five materials that dominate global resource use: steel, aluminium, cement, plastic and paper. Drawing on this analysis and on real industrial case studies, the authors set out practical ways to deliver the same products and services using less new material, and estimate the economic effects of doing so. The book won the American Library Association's Outstanding Academic Title award.
