Gaston Bachelard studies how poems, novels and other writing represent lived, intimate space, tracing images such as the house, drawers, nests, shells and corners to explore the poetic imagination rather than a scientific account of space.
La poética del espacio, first published in French in 1957, marks a turn in Gaston Bachelard's work away from the philosophy of science toward a phenomenology of the poetic image. Rather than analyzing space scientifically, Bachelard studies how poems, novels, plays and songs represent lived space and its symbolic charge, tracing the imagination through images such as the house from cellar to attic, small enclosed spaces like drawers and chests, the nest, the shell, corners, miniatures, intimate spaces, the dialectic of inside and outside, and a phenomenology of roundness.
