Bruce Mau's 'Incomplete Manifesto for Growth' is a list of forty-three short statements about creative process, encouraging designers to treat growth, risk and even failure as part of a working method rather than obstacles to avoid.
'An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth' by designer Bruce Mau is a set of forty-three numbered statements setting out his beliefs, strategies and motivations for creative practice. Originally circulated in the late 1990s and printed in I.D. Magazine of International Design in 2001, the statements function both as a description of Mau's own design process and as a broader set of prompts for personal and creative growth. Recurring themes include treating growth as something one actively produces rather than something that merely happens, staying open to being changed by events, accepting that growth is not always comfortable or straightforwardly good, and treating joy and the willingness to fail as engines of creative development. The manifesto has circulated widely and been translated into many languages. Credits: Mau, B. (2001). An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth. I.D.: Magazine of International Design, 2, 56–58.
