In Afrikan Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Afrika, Zimbabwean designer Saki Mafundikwa used archival and field research to document historically marginalized African writing systems, their origins, cultural meaning and aesthetics.
A powerful example of qualitative observation is Saki Mafundikwa's research and graphic design for his book, "Afrikan Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Afrika". This project gives visibility to numerous historically marginalized indigenous African writing systems. Mafundikwa, a Zimbabwean designer, immersed himself in archival and field research to understand these scripts. He explored their historical origins, cultural significance, underlying values, and unique aesthetic nuances.
