About this course
This course holds the presentation of the Symbiotic Design Framework given by Dr. Gonzalo Raineri Bernain at RSD15, Relating Systems Thinking and Design, the symposium of the Systemic Design Association. In one session it brings together the slides of the presentation, the introduction and chapter 1 of the book, the framework's components wheel, a talk at Kazerne Eindhoven and the Geoposition Climate Tool, all of them open at the same time.
The Symbiotic Design Framework moves design away from extractive, human-centred practice and towards design understood as a living social system that produces itself. It builds on the work of Maturana, Varela and Luhmann, and on Arturo Escobar's Pluriverse: a world where many worlds fit, where design makes room for other ways of knowing instead of imposing one standard on everyone.
The presentation shows how to read any design system through its components, Humans, Commissions, Observations, Procedures, Partners, Technology and Outcomes, and through the kind of relationship between them, from mutualism to parasitism. Read this way, a practice can see where it extracts and move towards relationships in which every party benefits, so that its work contributes to a world where many worlds fit.
For design theorists, doctoral researchers, educators and practitioners working on wicked problems who want an approach grounded in ethics.
