The Club of Rome is running a three-session online webinar, African Environmentalism of Soil, on 22, 23, and 24 July 2026, using soil as both literal ground and cultural lens. The series connects traditional ecological knowledge with soil science, frames land restoration as a question of sovereignty, and closes on liberation thinker Amilcar Cabral and his contribution to soil social science and regenerative education. It sits close to the Symbiotic Design Framework insistence on Nature as a partner and stakeholder, its push toward Regeneration over mere sustaining, and a decolonial, pluriversal reading of whose knowledge counts.
Across three sessions the webinar addresses soil degradation as a threat to food security and ecosystems, the chronic underfunding of soil science, and the cultural and ancestral significance of soil. It draws traditional ecological knowledge into dialogue with modern science and treats the restoration of land as inseparable from self-determination.
Seen through the framework, the series illustrates several of its commitments at once: Nature recognised as a stakeholder with its own agency, Regeneration as the aim beyond harm reduction, the challenge Decolonial Design poses to universal Western models, and the Pluriverse, a world in which many ways of knowing the ground beneath us can coexist. The sessions run online and registration is via the Club of Rome. Daily times are 11:00 to 13:00 SAST.
