Towards a new disciplinary framework for contemporary creative design practice

This paper argues that contemporary design practice needs a consistent, design-specific vocabulary to describe how designers now work across and between disciplines such as computing, electronics and bioengineering. It proposes clear, distinct definitions for multidisciplinary, crossdisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary design.
Dykes, Rodgers and Smyth argue that contemporary design practice is increasingly characterized by a blurring of traditional design domains, with design activity now often supported by other specialist fields such as computing, electronics or bioengineering. To understand and support this kind of collaborative, cross-domain working, the paper proposes a consistent, design-specific disciplinary framework. It argues that using the terms "multidisciplinary design," "crossdisciplinary design," "interdisciplinary design" and "transdisciplinary design" in a clear and consistent way allows researchers to delineate and analyze the increasingly complex and varied domain of contemporary creative design practice.
