Moura and Almeida (2013) compare the sustainability claims that jeanswear companies make in their marketing against what they actually do in garment design and production, based on a literature review and interviews with industry professionals. They find a gap between sustainability language and sustainability practice in this segment of the fashion industry.
This paper examines how sustainability is used and practiced within the jeanswear segment of the fashion industry. Drawing on a literature review together with field research, including structured interviews and questionnaires with industry professionals, the authors compare the sustainability claims companies make in their communications against their actual garment design and development practices. The study finds a gap between the sustainability language used in marketing and what is actually carried out in production, and offers this as a critical case study of how sustainability discourse functions in contemporary fashion design.
