The idea of design

'The Idea of Design: A Design Issues Reader', edited by Victor Margolin and Richard Buchanan and published by MIT Press in 1995, gathers essays originally printed in the journal Design Issues (volumes 4 through 9). The collection is organized around three themes: reflection on the nature of design itself, the meaning of the products design creates, and the place of design within world culture. Contributors include figures such as Rudolf Arnheim, Victor Papanek, Clive Dilnot, Tomas Maldonado and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, among others, and the range of their approaches is meant to illustrate the pluralistic, interdisciplinary character of design thinking in contemporary culture.
