The Black Experience in Design

A landmark anthology of teaching, research and conversation seen through a Black and African-diasporic lens — voices long marginalised in design education. It works on the SDF's institutional facet, widening whose knowledge counts inside the profession. According to the publisher, the book spotlights teaching practices, research, stories and conversations from a Black and African diasporic lens, addressing work that has been excluded from a design history and educational canon that has heavily favored European modernist influences. Written in the aftermath of the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests in the United States, it is framed as an opportunity for educators, practitioners and students to make long-term, systemic changes in design education, research and practice, and to reclaim the contributions of Black designers. As an anthology centering a range of perspectives, it aims to exemplify the collaborative, multidisciplinary nature of design and to serve as both inspiration and a catalyst for the next generation of designers.
