Systems design for sustainable development applied to an IDC context - A case study of a Mindelo periphery, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde

This conference paper by A. F. Couvinhas, D. A. Coelho, P. Tamborrini and L. Bistagnino presents a case study applying systemic design to sustainable development in the periphery of Mindelo, on São Vicente Island, Cape Verde, a country the paper treats as an Insular Developing Country (IDC). Drawing on four months of ethnographic fieldwork carried out with residents between April and July 2010, the authors document the gap in living conditions between the city of Mindelo and its peripheral settlements, where many residents live in precarious tin housing without running water and with hazardous access routes. Working directly with the affected communities, the researchers used that fieldwork to draft design solutions intended to be readily accepted by residents and to improve everyday living conditions in the settlements studied.
