Probes, toolkits and prototypes: three approaches to making in codesigning

Sanders and Stappers describe how the role of making in the design process has grown and taken new forms over roughly a decade, moving from designers alone using making to give shape to the future, toward designers and non-designers making together as a way of making sense of the future. The paper surveys the landscape of design research and practice as of the end of 2013, giving particular attention to the role of making across three approaches (cultural probes, generative toolkits and design prototypes), two mindsets (designing for people and designing with people), three points of focus in time (the world as it is, the near future and the speculative future), and variations in design intent (provoking, engaging and serving).
