This 1987 United Nations report, chaired by Gro Harlem Brundtland, introduced the now-standard definition of sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It argues that poverty and environmental degradation are linked and calls for changes in patterns of production and consumption worldwide.
In 1987 the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), chaired by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, published Our Common Future, commonly known as the Brundtland Report, through the United Nations and Oxford University Press. The report defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, a formulation that became the basis for how sustainable development is generally understood today. It argues that the era's critical environmental problems stemmed largely from poverty in the global South and unsustainable consumption and production patterns in the global North, and that economic growth and environmental health are inseparably linked. The report laid groundwork for the 1992 Earth Summit, Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration, and the later Commission on Sustainable Development.
