This conference paper examines the ideas of Brazilian designer Joaquim Redig, centered on his 1977 essay that was the first Brazilian text to conceptualize industrial design as a discipline. It looks at how Redig used typographic and diagrammatic methods to express his views on the meaning and purpose of design.
João de Souza Leite's paper, presented at the International Information Design Conference and published in Blucher Design Proceedings, examines the design thinking of Brazilian designer Joaquim Redig, centered on his 1977 essay "Sobre a Prática do Desenho Industrial" (About Industrial Design), written for the fifteenth anniversary of Brazil's ESDI design school (Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial). The paper describes this as the first work produced in Brazil to conceptualize industrial design as a discipline in its own right, and analyzes how Redig used typographic and diagrammatic criteria, rather than only prose, to convey his ideas about what design means and does.
