The Ko-haty (Co-home) initiative in Lviv renovates abandoned buildings into temporary housing for people displaced by the war in Ukraine, with residents contributing labour and skills to the renovation and upkeep of their new community.
A powerful design example can be seen in the "Ko-haty" (Co-home) initiative in Lviv, Ukraine. In response to the full-scale invasion, architects and volunteers began renovating abandoned buildings to create dignified temporary housing (the "shelter") for internally displaced persons (IDPs). The relationship becomes mutually defensive: the project provides safe housing and a community structure, protecting IDPs from the precarity of displacement. In return, the IDPs often contribute their labor, skills, and social energy to the renovation and maintenance of the homes (the "resource"), actively participating in the creation of their own safe haven and strengthening the resilience of their new community.
