Nigan Bayazit surveys four decades of design research, tracing how the field's methodology and its understanding of design activity, designers' thinking, and the nature of designed objects developed from the 1960s onward. The paper positions design research as a systematic inquiry into the knowledge embodied in man-made things and systems.
Nigan Bayazit's 2004 Design Issues paper reviews roughly forty years of design research, from its methodological beginnings in the 1960s through the following decades. The paper opens from L. Bruce Archer's definition of design research as systematic inquiry aimed at knowledge of, or embodied in, the configuration, composition, structure, purpose, value, and meaning of man-made things and systems. From there it traces how design methodology and design science developed as fields, examining how researchers have studied the way designers work and think, and the physical embodiment and meaning of designed objects, across the history of the discipline.
