Ana Cravino examines design research as a field of study, asking what its object of study is and what kind of knowledge it produces. She argues for treating design as an autonomous research discipline, distinguishing research carried out for, about and through design.
In "Hacia una Epistemología del Diseño," published in the Universidad de Palermo's Cuadernos del Centro de Estudios en Diseño y Comunicación (issue 82), Ana Cravino reflects on the nature of design research: its object of study, the kind and conditions of knowledge it produces, and the different approaches such research can take. She argues that design disciplines should be recognized as having an autonomous research status, and distinguishes between research conducted for design, research about design, and research through design as different but related ways design generates knowledge.
