This paper by Ceschin and Gaziulusoy reviews how Design for Sustainability has evolved, from a focus on individual products to broader product-service systems and, eventually, whole socio-technical system transitions. It proposes a framework mapping this evolution across four levels of innovation.
This paper traces the evolution of Design for Sustainability (DfS) research and practice. Following a broadly chronological path, it reviews the field and groups the design approaches developed over recent decades into four increasing levels of innovation: Product, Product-Service System, Spatio-Social, and Socio-Technical System. Building on this review, the authors propose an evolutionary framework and map the reviewed DfS approaches onto it, showing how the field has moved from addressing single products toward addressing systemic and societal transitions.
