El Paradigma Cualitativo en la Investigación Socio-Educativa

This is a book-length introduction to the qualitative research paradigm in socio-educational research, published by the Central American Educational and Cultural Coordination (CECC) together with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI), San José, Costa Rica, 2007. It traces the historical background of the qualitative-versus-quantitative debate in the philosophy of science, from its roots in Greek philosophy through the positivism-versus-hermeneutics and critical-rationalism-versus-critical-theory debates, before setting out the theoretical, epistemological and methodological foundations specific to the qualitative paradigm. Later chapters address the relationship between the researching subject and the object of study, the choice of qualitative method (including hermeneutic-dialectic, phenomenological, comprehensive, naturalistic, ethnographic and grounded-theory approaches), qualitative techniques for gathering information such as participant observation, interviews, life histories and focus groups, and finally how the credibility of qualitative findings is established, including triangulation and methodological rigor.
