This article traces the growth of graphic design in Argentina, describing how advertising, magazines, television graphics and animation became part of everyday visual culture. It also covers how graphic design programs spread across Argentine universities, starting with La Plata and Cuyo.
Verónica Devalle's article, published in the journal Alpha (Universidad de Los Lagos), traces the growth of graphic design in Argentina. It describes how billboards, brochures, advertising, magazines, television graphics and animated design became embedded in daily life, to the point of displacing the classical role of illustration and drawing in the country's visual culture. On the academic side, the article follows the spread of graphic design as a university career in Argentina, beginning with programs created at the National University of La Plata and at Cuyo in the 1950s and 1960s, and later adopted by many other higher education institutions.
