Design practices in design thinking

Lucy Kimbell's paper argues that although design thinking, designerly ways of knowing and design attitude are usually described in terms of practices, design studies literature has paid little attention to the wider 'practice turn' in contemporary social and management theory. She applies ideas from practice theory to ask what actually constitutes a design practice, focusing on two questions: the role played by objects in holding a practice together, and how knowledge is understood within that practice. Three studies of organizations that have applied a practice lens are discussed, introducing the ideas of 'strategy-as-practice', 'technologies-in-practice' and the role visual practices play in constituting knowledge.
