Yanki Lee's paper looks at thirty years of design participation practice and argues that designers need new roles and tactics, including attention to the aesthetic quality of collaborative work, to make participatory design more effective.
Yanki Lee, writing from the Royal College of Art's Helen Hamlyn Centre, examines the co-design process and argues for redefining what 'user participation in design' means and for articulating new roles for designers within it. The paper focuses on areas the author judges to have been neglected across three decades of design participation work, particularly the aesthetic quality of participatory design practice and the collaborative relationship between design research and participatory design thinking. It reflects on the author's own experience as a professional designer working with different groups through action research projects, using concrete case studies to illustrate the argument, including creative participation tactics such as collaborative visualization alongside more conventional methods like interviews and focus groups.
