First published by Taschen in 2001 and later issued as a larger 768-page anniversary edition, the book by Charlotte and Peter Fiell offers an A-to-Z tour of twentieth-century designers, styles and movements, weighted toward Europe and North America with some coverage beyond. The Wall Street Journal called it a reference for designers and architects that also entertains a general reader, and the New York Times described it as an important and accessible reference. The current edition belongs to Taschen's Bibliotheca Universalis series and covers figures including De Stijl, Dieter Rams, Charles and Ray Eames, and Philippe Starck.
