Alice Rawsthorn surveys how designers are responding to complex, intersecting global challenges, from artificial intelligence and the craft revival to gender politics and the refugee crisis, in a book conceived as a subjective field guide rather than a conventional history. It grew out of her 'By Design' columns written for Frieze between 2014 and 2017, and includes an appendix of more than fifty biographies of contemporary designers.
