Chinampa system
The Chinampa system, or 'floating gardens,' was an agricultural technique developed in ancient Mexico that created fertile land from swampy areas while managing water levels and nutrient cycling.
Ancient civilizations developed incredibly sophisticated agricultural techniques aimed at long-term productivity and resilience: the intricate crop rotation systems and large-scale water management infrastructure (canals, reservoirs) developed in Mesopotamia, or the highly productive Chinampa system ('floating gardens') of ancient Mexico, which created fertile land from swampy areas while managing water levels and nutrient cycling.
