A conference paper examining how the biological concept of autopoiesis, developed by Maturana and Varela, has been taken up, and contested, within contemporary social theory. Presented at the 2010 Spanish Congress of Sociology in Madrid.
This conference paper, presented by M. Arnold at the X Congreso Español de Sociología (Spanish Congress of Sociology) in Madrid, addresses the reception and use of autopoiesis, originally a biological theory of self-producing living systems developed by Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, within contemporary social theory. Other work by the same research group has examined how sociologists such as Niklas Luhmann adapted autopoiesis to describe self-referential social systems, and the paper's title, "Autopoiesis as Explosive Material in Contemporary Social Theory," signals a critical look at how disruptive or contested that transfer of a biological concept into social theory has been.
