A systems theory perspective on the relationship between practice and research in the making disciplines

Kirstine Riis's 2013 paper, published in Relating Systems Thinking and Design (and related to a companion publication in FORMakademisk), applies systems theory, with particular reference to the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann and to how Rasmussen, Kruse, and Holm have used Luhmann's theory, to the relationship between practice and research in the making disciplines. The paper builds and emphasizes a fundamental distinction between the practice system and the scientific system, framing practice as the development of knowledge and research as the generation of knowledge. From this distinction it identifies four forms of knowledge: practical knowledge and professional knowledge, both associated with the practice system, and research knowledge and philosophy-of-science knowledge, both associated with the scientific system.
