This edited volume collects short passages from Jesper Hoffmeyer's writing on biosemiotics, each paired with a scholarly response, exploring how meaning and sign processes can emerge in living nature from single cells to animal behaviour.
A More Developed Sign: Interpreting the Work of Jesper Hoffmeyer gathers more than eighty scholars from over twenty countries, each choosing a short passage from Hoffmeyer's writing and responding to it with their own commentary, whether as analysis, critical disagreement or conceptual extension. The volume centers on Hoffmeyer's project of biosemiotics, a semiotics of nature intended to explain how meaning and sign processes, from the simplest single-celled organisms to animal cognition and social behaviour, can emerge from a universe that was not originally organized around meaning. It was edited by Donald Favareau, Paul Cobley and Kalevi Kull and published as part of the Tartu Semiotics Library.
