A Japanese design-research paper applying the biological concept of autopoiesis to design, proposing an "enactive interface" that treats artifacts as part of a user's active environment rather than passive tools, and using the idea of embodiment to bridge self-producing living systems and designed artifacts.
This paper by Hiroya Igarashi, Makoto Ohtsubo and Tomohiro Uemura, presented at a conference of the Japanese Society for the Science of Design, applies the biological theory of autopoiesis to design. It focuses on the relationship between users and the artifacts they use, and proposes the concept of an "enactive interface": a shift away from thinking of an artifact as a passive tool toward thinking of it as part of an environment the user actively engages with. The authors address the conceptual difficulty of connecting autopoiesis (self-producing systems, characteristic of living beings) with allopoiesis (systems, like artifacts, that are produced by something other than themselves), proposing that the idea of embodiment helps bridge the two, and they outline the implications for a design methodology built on this basis through a case study.
