A four-year PhD at Carnegie Mellon's School of Design for experienced professionals who want to do design-led research while staying in practice. Applications for fall 2027 open on 1 November 2026; online information sessions on 5 November 2026 and 28 January 2027.
The PhD in Transition Design is built for experienced professionals who want rigorous, design-led research while remaining in the systems they seek to change. The four years combine an intensive in-person first year with a flexible, low-residency research phase over the remaining three. Research looks at design as a strategic lever in complex systems, toward more sustainable, equitable and resilient futures, in organisations, cities, policy, materials, services and culture. Applications for fall 2027 open on 1 November 2026. Online information sessions, hosted by Jonathan Chapman, Director of Doctoral Studies: 5 November 2026, 11:00 to 12:00 ET, and 28 January 2027, 14:00 to 15:00 ET.
