A peer-reviewed journal of research on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture and urbanism outside Europe, published twice a year by InVisu (CNRS/INHA) and distributed on OpenEdition. It covers how architectural forms, technologies, models and doctrines were transferred, adapted and appropriated in colonial and postcolonial settings. It is free to read, charges authors nothing, uses blind review by international experts and accepts articles in German, English, Spanish, French and Italian.
ABE: Architecture Beyond Europe is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to research on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture and urbanism outside Europe. The journal addresses questions related to the transfer, adaptation and appropriation of architectural forms, technologies, models and doctrines in colonial and postcolonial situations. The journal grew out of an international network formed within the project European Architecture Beyond Europe (Action Cost IS0904). This project showed the need to bring together researchers working on the spread of architecture from and to Europe, whether through formal and informal modes of imperialist expansion, the building of nation-states after independence, the role of international organisations, or the transnational circulation of architects and experts, ideas and concepts. ABE publishes monographs and methodological studies; reviews of books, conferences and exhibitions; presentations of documentary collections or archives, as well as reports on recently defended theses.
