Under the Commission Component's Variables, wicked commissions are said to require methodologies "more appropriate for navigating the complexities presented by wicked commissions, aiming for long-term societal transitions and systemic understanding rather than single, definitive solutions": "Methodologies like Transition Design, Systemic Design toolkits and specifically the Symbiotic Design Framework." The Procedures Component names its originators directly: "As pioneers of Transition Design, Terry Irwin, Gideon Kossoff, and Cameron Tonkinwise emphasize procedural frameworks for addressing complex, long-term societal transitions." It is also listed among design's evolving methodologies ("Service Design, Transition Design, and Pluriversal Design") and named as a means to overcome path dependencies: "Transition Design methodologies aim to overcome them."
